Andy Prieboy recently released two new songs, “Higher Ground” and “Who I Am” to complete his most current collection, The Questionable Profits of Pure Novelty

— which includes the singles he put out in late 2008 and early 2009. They are available on Prieboy’s official website.

We play the track “Suzy Clone” from The Little Girls’ 2009 CD, Today… and Yesterday. A special note on the track is that it was written in the very early days of the band, but until now it was never recorded.

We also want to say “Happy Birthday” to Josie Cotton (May 15th), who will soon release a new album, Pussycat Babylon. We play a double-shot of Cotton’s music in hour 1.

Also, my longtime friend Rich celebrated his 40th birthday on May 14th — just days after calling me an old man as I turned 41. I play a very appropriate song to commemorate his milestone called “Life Begins at 40″ by a the New Zealanders Dave and the Dynamos. They made a quite funny video for it as well:

This week, Paul Collins of The Beat and Co-Founder of The Nerves talks with me about his career, thoughts on music, the continued strength and loyal fanbase of the power pop genre and his soon-to-be-released new album: The King of Power Pop. Our conversation leads off the second hour of the show.

After living around the world and studying music at Julliard, Collins teamed up with Peter Case and Jack Lee to form The Nerves, which released a self-titled EP in 1976 that featured the track “Hanging on the Telephone,” which would be a 1978 smash for Blondie.

Collins and Case later formed a short-lived, but critically-acclaimed band called The Breakaways, but never released an album under that name. As Case went on to form The Plimsouls, Collins found success after founding The Beat, a band that remains strong under his leadership today.

During our interview, Collins and I talk discuss:

• Collins’ musical background and how he and The Nerves developed their sound.
• The place the Nerves and The Beat have in LA New Wave history
• The power-pop genre and why its following continues to grow and appeal to more than one generation of fans

This week, as the band is touring the U.S., Cowboy Junkies bassist and founding member Alan Anton chats with me in the second hour. We discuss the band’s origins dating back from grade school days, some of their classic music, new projects, touring and some hockey.

The Cowboy Junkies might be best described as a Canadian version of Americana music with a hint of mellow jazz and some blues. They burst on the American alt-rock scene with the 1988 album The Trinity Session, which was recorded on a very small budget with one microphone at the landmark Church of the Holy Trinity in downtown Toronto. Their cover of “Sweet Jane” received a lot of airplay on college radio and MTV’s alternative music shows. The album also featured an interesting cover of Patsy Cline’s “Walking After Midnight” and a part-original/part-cover of “Blue Moon.”

During our conversation, Anton discusses his thoughts on the band’s style of music, performing, the Cowboy Junkies’ approach to touring, a history of the band and some upcoming projects. Fans in the NY-Metro area can see them on various dates in the next few weeks, including a show at the legendary Bethel Woods Center for the Arts on May 8th. The podcast for our 4/9 Revenge of the 80s Radio show is up and available at the bottom of this post. Martha Davis returns to Revenge of the 80s Radio. This time, we talk about her new children’s album: Red Frog Presents: 16 Songs for Parents and Children. Our interview leads off the second hour of the show. We also play new music by Kate Garner and Louise Robey, as well as classic alternative tracks from Berlin, The Jim Carroll Band, Strawberry Switchblade, Men Without Hats, Elvis Costello and more.

While we discuss Red Frog, Martha also offers her take on children’s entertainment today and why she created her own album for youngsters. We also cover the importance of arts programs in schools and exposing kids to several genres at home. In truth, the empty suits who run children’s television and music operations are too careful (read: “politically correct”) and fearful to offend or scare little ones — as well as their parents — to the point where programming and entertainment aimed at them have been dumbed down to the point where everything is as generic as the mainstream adult-oriented music. Things have changed since we were younger: we had violent cartoons, monsters hosting Sesame Street (not annoying ones like Elmo – Ms. Davis and I share the same disdain for both that creature and the Purple Dinosaur) and we played outside. We also were exposed to dramatic stories and music that opened up our imaginations. These days, parents and school officials are too over-protective of their children in too many ways and that has a negative effect on things to which they need to be exposed to like arts, culture and history.

All may not be lost, at least on the music end. In addition to Davis’ brilliant Red Frog Presents, some high-quality and very well-made children’s albums were written and performed by the likes of They Might Be Giants and Stan Ridgway & Pietra Wextrum. These creations treat kids as intelligent beings and are just as entertaining for adults as they are for the kiddies. This is a trend that seemed to have been re-started by the Cartoon Network‘s “What a Cartoon” series: kids’ cartoons that offer some references for parents so they can watch and enjoy at the same time, while knowing what their little guys and girls are watching (I have commented on the brilliance of “Cow & Chicken” several times as a talk radio host in the past). The artists also brought to their young listeners healthy servings of music they would never been exposed to by mainstream media and the always-fearful child development “professionals” who seem to worship the Elmos of the world.

In Red Frog Presents, Davis creates a whimsical and fascinating array of characters in songs that span several genres including classic jazz, march, tango, 60s movie kitsch and classical. Her vocals range from a squeaky tone (not digitally enhanced) to the classic Motels style. Davis unveils another set of talents new to fans of her 80s work, and with that she presents an album of stories, lessons and fun in a combination not found in many forms of children’s entertainment today. Red Frog Presents is available for download via Amazon and other digital outlets.

2010 is going to be a very busy year for Davis, as she is planning to tour, is involved with an entrepreneurial venture, taking part in a very interesting upcoming podcast project and (as always) working on new music. She released two albums in recent years in addition to a single, “Mr. Grey,” less than two months before the time of this post. This week, in honor of the Easter holiday, we feature a track from Holly Beth Vincent‘s new Minnesota, California album, “Easter Bunny Homicide.” We also play classic alternative music from artists including Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, XTC, Front 242, David Bowie and Ultravox.

During the second hour of tonight’s Revenge of the 80s Radio show, we pay our annual tribute to some of the great comedy/novelty songs of the 1980s in honor of the nearing April Fools’ Day. We will play off-the-wall tracks from artists including Julie Brown, Bad News, Neil (Nigil Planer), Joe Dolce, Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper, Kip Adotta and Tim Cavanaugh.

In our first hour, we have another new track by Gorevette as the quartet continue their East Coast Run with The Donnas, and classic alternative music from artists including Louise Robey, REM, Voice of the Beehive and Martha and the Muffins.

New music for this week’s show comes from Gorevette and Louise Robey. Gorveette is getting ready for their first Eastern US and Japan tours since Nikki Corvette and Amy Gore started the band. Robey is currently working on a number of projects, including a music anthology box CD set.

Despite the celebratory occasion, we include a tribute to Marc Moreland, guitarist and founder of Wall of Voodoo. Moreland passed on eight years ago this week. He is remembered by fans for his distinct southwestern Americana-style triplet-centric sound, his own homages to great American songwriters and his imaginative approach to music. We play a Wall of Voodoo double-shot featuring Moreland’s guitar-playing during the first hour.

We also spun classic alternative cuts from artists including They Might Be Giants, Julian Cope, A-ha, The Little Girls and Missing Persons. The podcast edit for our 3/5/10 Revenge of the 80s Radio show is up and available at the bottom of this post. This week, we feature a conversation with Kate Garner. She, with Jeremy Healy and Paul Caplin, formed the trio Haysi Fantayzee. Garner is also an internationally-renowned fashion and art photographer, having had several critically-acclaimed shows and exhibits including her most recent, Jolly Darkness. Our interview leads off the second hour of the show. We also played new music from Garner, Debora Iyall and Martha Davis.

Kate Garner was already a respected fashion photographer when she met Healy and Carpin. Their diverse artistic backgrounds proved a unique tandem to create Hasyi Fantayzee, a band best known for their wild outfits and political messages hidden beneath catchy lyrics and danceable music. The band saw quick success with instant hits including “John Wayne is Big Leggy” and “Shiny, Shiny” and were on their way to superstar status. That, as Garner explains in the interview, wound up leading to the quick end of the band as well. Sadly, Haysi was only around to complete one album, thus breaking up the band.

After a brief solo stint, Kate continued photography full-time and found herself over time phasing out fashion photography in favor of more dark-artistic creative endeavors. Much of her avant-garde work can be seen on Garner’s website, kategarner.org.

In 2009, Kate Garner returned to the studio armed with a new talent: she taught herself the ukulele and, in doing so, she created her own sound on the traditional Hawaiian strings. Kate Garner 2.0 begins with her single, “Lucifer,” where she features her uke while questioning conventional wisdom about knowledge versus faith. One must also admire her inventive use of white noise in the chorus as well as her intentions with the pace changes toward the end (you will need to hear it to capture the mood). We play “Lucifer” at the end of our interview. “Sideways of Red” is the B-side, which also showcases bold keyboards and Garner’s admitted lack of respect for convention beginning with the cold vocal/keyboard combination that hammers in the track.

At one point in our conversation, Garner says she never thought of herself as having a good singing voice, this point was also driven home by her mother, who was an accomplished singer. While far from the conventional standards, she has a vocal range that move from pixie-like to forceful. She can also stretch her voice out to enhance her own singing, whether the music calls for an artistic use of arpeggios, needs the tone changes of a songbird or even a Dale Bozzio-esque squeak.

Throughout our conversation, Kate and I discuss several topics, including:

• Her early music influences.
• How she, Jeremy Healy and Paul Caplin formed Haysi Fantzyzee.
• Why, after instant success, the trio broke up after only one album.
• Kate’s career as both a fashion and art photographer
• Our shared philosophy on how boring “normal” really is — and how that is reflective in Kate’s art and music.
• Garner’s new music and her innovative plans for producing and distributing it.

Kate Garner continues to work on new photographic art and music with her label, iDIOt Records. As for her Haysi-mates, Healy is a well-respected and in-demand producer and DJ while Caplin has his own software company, Caplin Systems.

We also featured a world radio premiere of Debora Iyall‘s new “Stay Strong,” a single set to be released with her upcoming album tentatively titled Unsettled, scheduled to be out this summer. Fans of Romeo Void will hear a new side of Iyall with this single and the rest of the tracks, four of which are described in our review of them on this blog.

We also played the new track, “Mr. Grey,” by Martha Davis. She has been working on a number of creative projects, including a children’s album. Our 2009 interview with Davis is here.

A blizzard that hit the northeast hard kept me from doing a live Revenge of the 80s Radio show on Friday, but it did allow me to run an encore of the show featuring our 2009 conversation with the multi-talented, elegant and brilliant Adriana Kaegi. She is best known as a co-founder of Kid Creole and the Coconuts (with August Darnell and Coati Mundi) and leader of The Coconuts. Currently, she is runs her own business, Dear Addy Productions, and is working on new music after releasing her first solo album, TAG. Our interview leads off the second hour of the show.

Adriana Kaegi is well known as a performer, choreographer, costume designer, producer and businesswoman. She has also produced the documentary Kid Creole and My Coconuts, which features behind-the-scenes video, concert footage and excellent narration by Kaegi. The next screening will take place on March 24th at the Phoenix Art Museum; our review of the DVD is here.

Mary Buffett is perhaps best known for her many books on investing and management strategy, having learned from a mentor like former father-in-law Warren Buffett. She and co-author David Clark wrote several books on the wisdom of the Oracle of Omaha. Classic Alternative music fans might remember her hit single, a cover of “My Boyfriend’s Back,” and her EP of the same name while with Moby Dick Records — which also produced the likes of Yvonne Elliman, Lisa, The Immortals and the Boys Town Gang.

During our conversation, Mary Buffett talks about:

• Her start in the music business
• How she came to work with Moby Dick Records
• The making of “My Boyfriend’s Back”
• A project with Andy Prieboy
• …and what made her become a financial industry media star.

In addition to her EP and current fame, Mary Buffett managed acts, she was a record company executive and did projects with several other musicians (including one called Tokyo Calls For Aid with Andy Prieboy. Many of Mary Buffett’s readers of her books may be surprised to hear about her eclectic career and many talents. In watching some of her interviews and videos on Youtube, one could see that she utilizes those skills she honed as a performer and music executive quite keenly.

The podcast for our 2/5/10 Revenge of the 80s Radio show is up and available at the end of this post. This week, we pay tribute to Lux Interior a year after his passing with a block of music by The Cramps. We also played new music from Adriana Kaegi.

Lux Interior and wife/musical partner Poison Ivy Rorschach founded The Cramps on 1976 and created a sound that was to become the Psychobilly musical genre. Interior’s somewhat eerie vocal style and stage presence made him one of the faces of the New York punk scene. Their signature twang solidifies Poison Ivy’s place among the industry’s greatest guitarists. The Cramps’ impact on music history may be immeasurable and their influence will continue on with many alternative musicians today and in the future. Fans will continue to miss The Cramps and hearing Interior’s voice, as there may never be another band like them.

We also played Adriana Kaegi’s latest single, “I’ve Been Going Out,” and classic alternative tracks from Big Country, Altered Images, Wall of Voodoo, REM, INXS, Josie Cotton, Laibach and more.

On this week’s Revenge of the 80s Radio show, we feature new music from Gorevette, who a few days ago released their first EP, Lustfully Yours. We also played another previously unreleased recording from August Darnell (Kid Creole), who is currently working on his upcoming anthology album.

Gorevette is a creation of Detroit’s Nikki Corvette (Nikki and the Corvettes) and Amy Gore (the Gore Gore Girls), who teamed up to form a new collaborative supergroup with Gore’s former bandmate Lianna Castillo and Powertrane’s Al King.

At the time of this post, Gorevette and their fans are celebrating the release of Lustfully Yours with a series of weekend parties/concerts. According to Grevette’s management, the band is planning a potential tour through Japan, where Nikki Corvette re-established her following there after coming back onto the music scene with Ramo Records a few years ago after a long absence.

We also showcased classic alternative tracks from Romeo Void, Stan Ridgway, Haysi Fantayzee, Strawberry Switchblade, The Undertones, Icehouse and The Alarm as well as a 2008 track from Martha Davis and the Motels and “I don’t Subscribe,” a previously unreleased song form August Darnell.

This week, we played some of Michael Hutchence‘s classic tracks with INXS in tribute to what would have been his 50th birthday. We also featured a track from Boston-are musician Digney Fignus, whose 1984 video for “The Girl With the Curious Hand” not only won an MTV Basement Tapes contest, he cast model Gail Huff — now a newscaster who is married to Massachusetts newly-elected Senator Scott Brown — as the central character in the entry.

Fans and friends mourned the death of Michael Hutchence in 1997 when he was found dead in what was called a suicide. As frontman for INXS, he became the face of Australian New Wave in America, opening a wider audience to the likes of Mental As Anything, Pseudo Echo, Icehouse, Midnight Oil and others. This week, three fans (Jim Guest, Michelle McFerran and Matt Marsland) created and coordinated a campaign to give Michael Hutchence a #1 download song for his 50th birthday. There is also a brilliantly-done Michael Hutchence Tribute Website here. In memory of Hutchence and his contribution to new wave history, we played a full set of some of his greatest work with INXS during part of the second hour of the show.

One of the songs featured in the first hour is “The Girl With the Curious Hand,” by Digney Fignus, a Boston-area new waver who is now an alt-country/Americana music star. The video for his 1984 single won him a record contract, new equipment and other perks in MTV’s “Basement Tapes” contest. The piece is experiencing a new level of fame thanks to the lead woman in the video, Gail Huff. While she is already a well-known TV news anchor, she is also married to Scott Brown, who won the U.S. Senate seat belonging to the People of Massachusetts in a special election on January 19, 2010. While neither the song nor Fignus found much airplay or record sales as a result of the MTV exposure, a few uninterrupted listens to the track reveal its brilliance and the reason why Fignus still has a strong following today in the northeastern U.S.

Not much is known about Rikki St. James aside from her co-writing and singing the song “Yaya” on Ron Rogers’ Don’t Play With My Emotions EP from 1981. The song is as fun and danceable as its origins are interesting. St. James talks about how, as a young up-and-comer, she met Rogers and some good people at Ze Records, who gave Rikki her first shot in the business. She talks about how “Yaya” was originally part of a chant remembered from her younger years and conceived over a Blimpie’s sandwich. We also talk about Rikki’s musical background, breaking onto the industry from her point of view and what she is doing today as we introduce our airing of “Yaya” on Revenge of the 80s Radio.

In the summer of 2009, Darnell contacted Coconuts Co-Founder Adriana Kaegi, asking her to fine-tune several tracks that he had in his studio, but never released and for her help in bringing them to fans of the band. These cuts are now available to fans on Darnell’s Reverb Nation web page; we feature one of them in each hour of this week’s Revenge of the 80s. In hour 1, we play “Are You Bad Enough,” a feisty reggae-ish track with a generous serving of the classic Kid Creole attitude. Hour 2 is the soulful, yet funky “Yesterday’s Child.” We are happy to be the first radio program to air any of Darnell’s previously unreleased material and we plan to feature more in the coming months.

We also played classic alternative music from Voice of the Beehive, The Alarm, Jason and the Scorchers, The Belle Stars, U2 and INXS as well as “Kung Fu Girl,” a piece from Josie Cotton’s 2006 CD, Movie Disaster Music.

This week, we have the World Radio Premiere of Adriana Kaegi‘s new single, “I’ve Been Going Out,” which the Original “Mama Coconut” released earlier this week as the first follow-up to her brilliant TAG album. Adriana’s new electronica lounge music single is a collaboration between her creative mind with that of Ronnie Bruce Rogers, who produced the song with her. Adriana’s enchanting voice and personal charm shine with well-placed jazzy keyboard riffs and subtle horns throughout the track. “I’ve Been Going Out” is s bit more up-tempo them the music from TAG, and is yet another showcase of Adriana’s all-around talents as a performer and musician.

We also played a new remix of Louise Robey‘s “A Woman Scorned,” destined to be a club smash. It will soon be part of Robey’s upcoming musical anthology CD set.

From Holly Beth Vincent‘s 2009 album Minnesota, California, we showcased a “deeper cut:” her excellent cover of “Take It On the Run.” Vincent’s makes this song much stronger and more of a power ballad than the wimpier original. It is one of the many excellent tracks on Minnesota, California.

Wakeling’s music has always been politically charged, with classics like “Stand Down Margaret” and “Tenderness” coming quickly to mind, and his genuine concern is personified by his involvement in charity and humanitarian causes throughout his career. Wakeling is currently touring North America with the English Beat (Ranking Roger leads another “Beat” band in the UK) and says he will be releasing some new music in 2010.

Wakeling’s signature sound mixes elements form early punk, ska, new wave and soul. His musical creativity gave the Beat and General Public an advantage when writing and performing their more politically-oriented tracks; the bands played fun, danceable music while bringing the themed message out and not sounding too preachy. The “preachy” factor, historically, may have been popular in the 1960s, but diminished the intent and popularity of bands from the early 80s onward. Wakeling talks about straddling that line in our conversation, where he also discusses:

• The unorthodox way he learned to play guitar
• How he met Ranking Roger and formed what was to be the English Beat
• Politics and music
• His thoughts on issues of today
• His tour and upcoming new music

Tonight’s Revenge of the 80s Radio features a conversation with Dave Wakeling of the English Beat and General Public. He is currently on tour and expects to release new music early next year. Our discussion will play during the second hour of the show.

Wakeling’s sound has a quite intriguing origin to it, dating back to the first time he picked up a guitar. His unique approach to music (which you will find out more about in the interview) would up being the driving force behind his hybrid sound, mixing early punk, ska, reggae, new wave and soul to bring us the sound of the English Beat. After the Beat broke up, he and band-mate Ranking Roger formed the alt-supergroup General Public.

Wakeling has also worked as a producer, solo artist and contributed to charitable causes. Political issues and charity are extremely important factors in both Wakeling’s life and music. One of his most recent successful charity efforts was raising money for the Smile Train, which pays for surgery to fix the cleft palates of children from around the world.

In addition to the music, Dave offers his thoughts on the issues of the world from the Beat days through today as well as the balance an artist must make when producing politically-charged songs: bringing across the artist’s point, making the music entertaining and not sounding too preachy.

This week, we feature a new single from I, Ludicrous: “We’re the Support Band.” I, Ludicrous was formed in 1985 by John Procter and David Rippingale. In 2008, Martin Brett (formerly of Voice of the Beehive) joined the ensemble. They had some prominent albums in the 1980s and have continued to put out new material through today.

I, Ludicrous mixes early punk and some metal with a touch of pop for some extra energy. They can be a bit comical, almost Mojo Nixon-ish at times, yet — like Nixon — their musicianship sets them apart from others who try and do the same. They are still very popular in Britain and their new music constantly earns regular airplay there.

This week, we are proud to present the World Radio Premiere of Louise Robey‘s new single: “A Woman Scorned.” I had the honor of Louise, Stan Schaffer, Fred Lauver (Manager) and Suzanne Tripaldi (Robey’s agent) offering us the opportunity to be the first to air this superb dance track. Our review on the song can be found in this post from earlier this week.

“A Woman Scorned” is not the typical dance tune one tends to hear at clubs and can barely distinguish from the last twenty heard; this song stands out for several reasons. First, “A Woman Scorned” does something that Robey was seemingly not permitted to do in the 80s: it showcase’s her five-octave vocal range. From belting out the refrain to hitting some good lower notes and then changing up with soulful Indian-esque chants, Robey’s new song has the potential of returning her to the dance charts she dominated for a while in the mid 1980s.

So far, each of Louise Robey’s newest creations, “Pure Love,” “Baby Insane” and “A Woman Scorned,” one again establish her as continuing to be on he cutting edge of alternative dance music. The tracks are vastly eclectic in nature yet focus much more on the artistic end of the music rather than worry over formulas that have dominated the industry and handcuffed the likes of Louise and other exceptional singers and musicians of the past six decades, finally showcasing her true artistic talents. “A Woman Scorned” will very likely be spun at clubs around the world as the new Luise Robey fire catches on.

Robey has been working hard in the recording studio these days, recording both solo tracks and working with a reformation of her late 1970s band, Louise and the Creeps. Her anthology is in the works.

Robey has been extremely active in talent rights and royalties issues and offers a candid and honest take on how entertainment companies that are re-distributing television DVDs and musicians’ CDs continue to make money while the performers see nothing out of it. Robey and her husband, the legendary photographer Stan Shaffer, have started an artists’ forum (available through Facebook and MySpace) for people to air their gripes and learn how to retain the rights to their hard work. While she is promoting the release of the Friday the 13th – The Series DVDs in this interview and at a special 2010 event in Dallas, she and fellow stars John D. LeMay and Christopher Wiggins are not seeing a nickel of the proceeds.

During our conversation, Louise and I also talk about:

• Her take on the third season of Friday the 13th – the Series after LeMay left and new co-star Steve Monarque became a regular.
• Louise’s anthology, which features music from Louise and the Creeps, her solo work and new material

This week’s show features a conversation with one of the legendary women of punk — Holly Beth Vincent of Holly and the Italians. She is best known for the songs “Tell That Girl to Shut Up,” “For What It’s Worth (cover)” and her duet with Joey Ramone covering “I Got You Babe.” Holly’s new CD, Minnesota-California, is available now; we world premiered a track from the album at the end of our discussion. As you might remember, I was on vacation last week. Beth and I took the car and drove for about 6 hours each way. One of the other jobs I have is as Executive Producer of the Nationally Syndicated Money Matters radio show on the Business Talk Radio Network. Occasionally I fill in as the host of the program. Last week I invited Adiana Kaegi (co-founder of Kid Creole and the Coconuts) to discuss her internet video and promotions business, Dear Addy Productions, and the value of social networking to businesses looking to promote themselves through the new media. She was kind enough to take the time and come to the Montebello Mansion studios to do the show. We also dedicated some time to talk about Adriana’s new album, Tag, from which we used some tracks as “in-bumps” for Money Matters that day. Adriana is a truly amazing person who possesses a vast array of skills, creativity and business sense.

This week’s show features a conversation with Josie Cotton, who became the world’s new wave sweetheart when she performed (already an international hit) “Johnny Are You Queer” in the movie Valley Girl. While she is known most for singing “Johnny” and the undue controversy surrounding it, the musical world of Josie Cotton is much more than the image she had through an industry from which she walked away.

Would Josie have been better off without recording “Johnny?” While that point is arguable and addressed in our interview, there is little doubt that the things she had to put up with from the recording industry after gaining both international acclaim and notoriety from the song led to depriving the world of such a multi-talented artist for a long time. While “Johnny, Are You Queer” was a #2 single in Canada, stuffed suits blackballed her from the airwaves in the U.S. to the point where Elektra pulled the plug on a video for the song from fear of bad press. All of those factors led to substandard promotion of Josie’s rather superb work on her first two albums: Convertable Music and From the Hip. After that, Josie left the spotlight for a long time.

Josie came back from her long disappearance from the microphone (aside from one 1993 album) a short time ago with the CDs Invasion of the B-Girls and the critically-acclaimed Movie Disaster Music. In both albums Josie sings some of the best music featured in some of the worst low-budget movies — as she mixes her musical talents with her love of low-budget theater. She is currently working on a new CD: Pussycat Babylon.

During our interview, Josie and I discuss:

• How she got into the music business after leaving Texas for California
• The true origins of “Johnny, Are You Queer?” and the aftermath
• Josie’s passion for songwriting and influences
• Her love for B-Movies (we share a favorite)

Tonight’s Revenge of the 80s Radio show will feature a conversation with Josie Cotton. Most 80s fans remember Cotton for her performance of “Johnny, Are You Queer?” on Valley Girl. Josie left the spotlight for several years after her second album and a disdain for simple-minded industry suits at the time.

While her name will always be synonymous with “Johnny,” the true musical world of Josie Cotton consists of much more substance. Recently, she released two CDs featuring great music from B-movies, which reflects Josie’s love for low-budget cinema (a passion that I share as well). The CDs, Movie Disaster Music and Invasion of the B-Girls, were an original concept at the time, as nobody had brought up such an idea to recording companies.

Davis’ voice remains one of the most unique and recognizable in music history although she, surprisingly, never took formal lessons as a young woman.

Martha Davis is currently touring the nation with a new Motels lineup — including a FREE concert at Universal City Walk in Los Angeles on August 14th — and working on several interesting projects. Over the last few years, Davis put out some new material with The Motels and is in the middle of reworking Beautiful Life, which she first released in 2008 but will re-release for reasons she gives during the interview.

In our discussion, the topics Martha and I talk about include:

• Martha’s eclectic array of musical influences
• The first Motels band (1971-1977) vs. the second incarnation of the band (1978-1987)
• The eventful year of 1987
• Martha’s thoughts on music and how much of her own experiences take life in her songs

We also delve into Martha’s mind as a songwriter and revisit her evolution as a musician and performer. Davis is a true musical thinker; listening to her newer music reveals that she probably did not appreciate the constraints of the music industry and its need for constant “hit” songs from hot acts. As I learned in the interview, that was a part of the reason The Motels had to end. Although she made a brief disappearance from the music industry after her solo Policy album, she (thankfully) did not deprive us who loved her as the lead Motel her gift of a beautiful voice and soul. For that, Martha Davis, I and many others are grateful.

We also played a Micheal Jackson track in tribute to the longtime pop singer, who elevated the mini-movie music video concept among other accomplishments, after he passed away suddenly at age 50.

This week on Revenge of the 80s, we want to say “Happy Birthday” to Terri Nunn who will be celebrating tonight in concert at the Rosemont in Chicago with Berlin and the Regeneration Tour. We will play a classic Berlin track in her honor. We will also pay tribute to Michael Jackson who, although was a more mainstream artist, transcended the restrictions of genre. Also, what 80s fan did not grow up listening to the Jackson 5 one way or another?

We will also play cuts from several great artists of the era including Madness, Voice of the Beehive, Echo & the Bunnymen and The Little Girls.

This week, Revenge of the 80s will re-broadcast a the show featuring a conversation with Tony Kinman of the Dils, Rank & File, Blackbird and, currently, Los Trendy. Kinman and his brother co-founded the Dils, one of punk’s most influential bands. Our interview leads off the second hour of the show.

During our conversation, we talk about the San Francisco punk scene of the late 1970s and its influence on several artists of the 1980s. San Francisco punk was the breeding ground for top classic alternative artists like the Kinmans, Andy Prieboy and the Dead Kennedys.

In addition, we feature tracks from the Dils and a new piece from Tony’s new band, Los Trendy. We also play a song from Prieboy’s band, Eye Protection: “Can I See Your I.D.?”

The first hour includes tracks from Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Berlin, The Alarm and Strawberry Switchblade.

Leading off the second hour, we spent some time with ABC‘s Martin Fry, who will once again perform on the Regeneration Tour. Fry talked with us before last year’s concert series; that discussion can be found here.

Our conversation focused on some of the more interesting things happening with ABC recently, including the fine reception received from fans of all ages from last year’s Traffic album, an upcoming charity trek through the desert lands of Namibia and a special full-orchestra performance commemorating The Lexicon of Love as one of the world’s greatest albums. We also discussed Martin’s thoughts on performing live over the past few decades, cool suits and some new music coming from ABC.

ABC will be performing on this year’s Regeneration Tour with Terri Nunn & Berlin, Wang Chung and The Cutting Crew. Shows begin this week; ticket and tour information can be found on the Regeneration Tour Official Website. Last year, ABC’s set was filled with all of the style and energy one would expect from them as well as the excellent performances with the special aura Fry brings to the stage. They will be mixing some classics with tracks from Traffic and (according to Fry) some new music.

This week, we welcome the original Lexicon of Love, Martin Fry, to Revenge of the 80s Radio as he gets set to kick off his second straight year with the Regeneration Tour. We had Martin on last year and discussed some of ABC‘s history as well as Fry’s foray into Reality TV and last year’s “Traffic” CD.

This time, we will talk about the several new things happening with ABC, including this year’s tour, Martin’s upcoming trek through Namibia for charity and upcoming new music from the band. We also get Fry’s thoughts on performing live for more than 30 years and, of course, cool suits. Our conversation leads off the second hour of the show.
