The Divinyls’ Christina Amphlett dead at 53 after battling breast cancer, MS

After a long fight with breast cancer and Multiple Sclerosis, singer Christina Amphlett of the Divinyls passed away at her New York home yesterday. She was 53.

Amphlett announced to her fans she had multiple sclerosis in 2007 and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. Her husband of 14 years, musician Charley Drayton, released the news in a statement on Sunday, April 21:

“Christine Joy Amphlett succumbed to the effects of breast cancer and multiple sclerosis, diseases she vigorously fought with exceptional bravery and dignity… Chrissy’s light burns so very brightly. Hers was a life of passion and creativity; she always lived it to the fullest. With her force of character and vocal strength she paved the way for strong, sexy, outspoken women.”

Amphlett was best known for her distinct vocal style fronting the Divinyls, which she co-founded with ex-Air Supply members Mark McEntree and Jeremy Paul. They found success quickly as “Boys In Town,” a song they recorded for the movie “Monkey Grip,” reached the top 10 on the Australian singles chart in 1981. They would score several hits in their native Australia throughout the 80s including “Science Fiction,” “Sleeping Beauty” and “Good Die Young.” With those tracks, they earned airplay on top alternative stations in the US. “Science Fiction” was named one of the top 30 Australian Singles of all-time by Australian Performing Right Association.

Their breakthrough hit, “Pleasure and Pain,” won the band their most prominent international attention to date in 1987. Four years later, they would achieve chart success around the world with the hit “I Touch Myself.” Amphlett and McEntree’s most recent single was “Don’t Wanna Do this,” recorded in 2007 after the group was inducted into the ARIA hall of Fame.

In March 2012, the singer posted a heartfelt status to her fans on her Facebook page:

Unfortunately the last 18 months have been a real challenge for me having breast cancer and MS and all the new places that will take you.You become sadly a patient in a world of waiting rooms,waiting sometimes hours for a result or an appointment and you spend a lot time in cold machines like MRI,CT machines,hospital beds,on your knees praying for miracles,operating rooms,tests after tests,looking at healthy people skip down the street like you once did and you took it all for granted and now wish you could do that.
I have not stopped singing throughout all this in my dreams and to be once again performing and doing what I love to do.I have been writing the occasional song with a wonderful collaborator Kraig Jarret and two weeks ago we performed some of those songs in NYC in the West Village.My illnesses have really exhausted this little body of mine that I have thrown from one end of a stage to another and performed thousands of shows thats sadly some of you missed.With that said I am getting stronger but there is still some fine tuning and work to be done on myself.It’s a different self but my voice is strong and not affected by the MS as some reviewers have cruelly reported.I can walk altho sometimes I wobble but try to wobble with the beat.I look after myself and my husband has been through this with me every part of the way and I cannot imagine what I would have done without him and his kindness.I did something right.My lttle dog Holiday lays on the end of the bed when I am not feeling great and doesn’t leave my side.I don’t reach out to people and talk about what I go through as we are all going through something and for someone who once was fancy free I have all of this in my life “So I Know”.I am grateful to have the knowledge that all of this has shown me and I feel privledged that I am strong enough to “know” and share that it’s really alright.I will sing again,I will perform again but this time “I know” I hope you understand what I mean and if you don’t you will one day and be grateful.Yes Lawrence What A Life and this is Life.We must never be afraid.

Amphlett’s distinct voice was both unmatchable and unforgettable. She was as sensual as she was strong when performing in her videos and will be greatly missed. Revenge of the 80s will play a block of Divinyls music in honor of her passing.

Spandau Ballet movie, book in the works

Spandau Ballet announced today on their website that the group will be featured in an upcoming documentary film.

While little details are out as of the publishing of this post, the title will be: Soul Boys of the Western World: Spandau Ballet – the Movie. If all goes to plan, it will be in theaters in 2014.

The announcement comes only a day after the band, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, made available a limited number of special 20×20 lithographs of the “True” album artwork with hand-signed autographs from its members on each.

Update: Spandau Ballet announced they will release a special edition 2-CD set re-release of their 1983 “True” album to celebrate their hit title track’s 30th anniversary complete with remixes and previously-unreleased music. Fans will also be treated to a free Spandau Ballet App (available on April 26).

In addition, Genesis Publications plans to unveil a picture book chronicling Spandau Ballet’s history and rise to iconic status. For more details, visit our Examiner page.

Kate Bush honored with CBE award

Kate Bush today was honored in a special ceremony as a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. A medal was bestowed upon the singer today by Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle.

Bush received the CBE for her services to music throughout her career, which began in 1978 with her first album, The Kick Inside, after begin discovered by respected rocker David Gilmour. In a statement she released on her official website, the singer dedicated the medal to her family and music collaborators:

I feel incredibly thrilled to receive this honor which I share with my family, friends and fellow musicians and everyone who has been such an important part of it all. Now I’ve got something really special to put on top of the Christmas tree. The ‘everyone’ in the quote above of course includes all of you.  Thank you so very much for all your fantastic support and encouragement.  I feel extremely privileged to still have an audience.  It’s you that have made my work, which would otherwise have just been creative projects, into a success.

Bush’s career is highlighted by several awards for her videos and music. Her most memorable songs include “Running Up That Hill,” “Wuthering Heights,” “Babooska,” “This Woman’s Work” and “The Man With the Child in His Eyes,’ which she wrote at age sixteen.

Her most recent album, the award-winning 50 Words For Snow, was recorded and released in 2011.

The band’s publicist, Tony Bonyata of Pavement PR, said in a press release that the band will set up additional dates.

Their new video, for “Someday Our Love Will Sell Us Out,” is a quite somber one, featuring Lowery in a hooded sweater and the rest of the band playing at various scenic places. The video carefully reflects the ballad’s mood as Lowery hides his face slightly as he conveys the mix of sadness, defeat and honesty in the lyrics. After a mix of location shots and driving sequences, the video ends (interestingly) at a port-a-potty. While that last image could have reflected the sobriety of the track, Jonathan Segel steps out of the commode with a bit of a smile and offering a rousing thumbs-up.

Annette Funicello’s mark in classic alternative music history

While many are mourning the loss of one of America’s sweethearts, Annette Funicello, today. We will fondly remember her for several things: her brave battle with Multiple Sclerosis, repeats of her 60s beach movies with Frankie Avalon and her energetic Skippy peanut butter commercials, the Mickey Mouse Club among them. Still, it was this special duet with Fishbone for her and Avalon’s Back to the Beach Movie, “Jamaica Ska” that will always come to mind whenever I think of her:

Annette Funicello passed away this morning at age 70. We will miss you, but watching this video and hearing you sing will always make us smile. Rest in peace, from us at Revenge of the 80s Radio.

Revenge of the 80s welcomes two new affiliates

Revenge of the 80s welcomes two new stations to our family of affiliates: WMAC Radio 107.3FM, Manchester UK and Flashback Radio out of Honolulu, Hawaii.

WAMC Radio features a lineup of shows with presenters who play and talk about music from various genres and eras. The station’s personalities include Spencer James, Alec Nicol, “Big Tommy” and Wayne Bennett. WMAC Radio will broadcast Revenge of the 80s three times each week: Tuesdays 6pm GMT, Friday 4am GMT and Saturday 5pm GMT.

Flashback Radio has been running since 1998, successfully growing a large audience while playing a vast mix of classics. They air Revenge of the 80s three times as well: Thursdays 6am and 4pm Pacific US time and Sundays at 8pm Pacific US time. Their lineup includes “Magic of the 80s,” “80s Retro Weekend” and “Hott 80s Rewind.”

Depeche Mode releases ‘Delta Machine’

Keeping to their two-decades old tradition of releasing a new album every four years, Depeche Mode‘s 13th studio album is now available in North America.

In “Delta Machine“  Andy Fletcher Martin Gore,  and Dave Gahan reach back to their early 80s roots with raw, catchy synthesizer hooks along with some interesting differences.

Those who enjoyed the group’s early years will pleasantly take in “Delta Machine,” as most of the tracks’ vocals are not heavily processed and a keyboard sound much like that of the early models they used to record with. The synthesizer effects range from percussive, as in “Welcome to My World,” to the spacey “My Little Universe” and “Always” to the smooth “Slow.” “Delta Machine” also features some unexpected styles from Depeche Mode: the somewhat bluesy “Alone” and the mellow 70s pop-sounding “Heaven.” The vintage sounds willsatisfy Depeche Mode’s earliest fans while the subtle dissensions add to the band’s overall mystique.

Our 3/15 show (with Murray Grindlay) podcast/syndication edit is up

The podcast/syndication edit for our 3/15 Revenge of the 80s is up and available at the bottom of this post. This week, New Zealand musician Murray Grindlay, known to many as “Monte Video” from his 1982 international smash hit “Shoop-Shoop, Diddy-Wop, Cumma-Cumma, Wang-Dang” as Monte Video and the Cassettes is our guest. Grindlay, however is well known for his work across the musical spectrum u New Zealand and Australia. He fronted The Underdogs, led other bands, released solo music, composed musical scores for movies and has built a successful jingles business (for which he earned a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012).

Murray discusses the early days with the Underdogs, the New Zealand music scene in the 60s and the 80s, the creation of the Monte Video character and how he not only fooled the Australian press into believing Ringo Starr played drums for the his band, but gaining the attention of David Geffen. We also talk about how Grindlay changed the landscape of commercial music writing and his work with the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Taj Mahal.

Did Iman hint of a Bowie tour to a fashion mag?

Ears around the world rang after reports of David Bowie’s supermodel wide, Iman, inadvertently hinting of a possible tour during an interview with a UK-based fashion magazine.

In Grazia, Imam is quoted as saying:

We have a 12 year old in school, so we are stuck, we can’t travel. Our schedule is around her, so I don’t know. We’ll have to go visit him, but we won’t be on tour with him because she’s in school.

Cherie Currie, The Avengers to headline Girls Got Rhythm Fest 2013

Cherie Currie and The Avengers will lead an all-star lineup of female-led acts as organizers for the annual Girls Got Rhythm Fest today announced the list of performers at the two-night event set for May 10-11 at the Amsterdam Bar and Hall in St. Paul, Minnesota.

`Tony Hadley, Kim Wilde play sky high to set a new record

80s icons Tony Hadley and Kim Wilde hopped a British Airways plane on Sunday to play an acoustic gig for fliers and staff. They set a world record as they performed at an altitude of 43.000 feet.

With help from Bananarama and Go West, Wilde and Hadley put on the show to benefit Comic Relief. The previous record was 42,080 feet in the air, set by James Blunt.

Hadley says of the feat: “I’m very excited to be in the Guinness Book of Records, it’s quite an amazing feat to be part of.”

British Airways has partnered with Comic Relief in fundraising efforts for many years, raising £4.5 million with their efforts.

Our 3/8 Revenge of the 80s podcast.syndication edit is up and available at the bottomof this post. This week, we play two new tracks, one from Australian Rock ‘n’ Soul band Plan B, who reformed in 2009, 25 years after the members moved on to solo projects in 1984. The song is a cover of Dexy’s “Plan B” with Big Jim Paterson (who was on with us last week) as the guest trombonist.

We also play a new track from Maryam Zadeh, who was on Revenge of the 80s in  May of 2011 . She is a solo artist with a heavily 80s-influenced sound and the current lead singer for Tapps. Zadeh released her cover of Freeze’s “AEIOU” a few days ago.

Regeneration Tour 2013 lineup set, dates coming.

The lineup for Regeneration Tour 2013 is now set. Organizers Red Entertainment announced today the artists who will perform during the August concert series.

This year’s tour will feature four acts:

Information Society, whose hits include “Walking Away” and “What’s On Your Mind (Pure Energy),” the latter of which  sampled Leonard Nimoy for an interesting hook.

Erasure’s Andy Bell, one-half of the noted synth-pop duo who who crowded the world’s dance floors with “Oh, L’amour,” “Chains of Love” and “A Little Respect,” In recent years, Bell has released several solo tracks, including some under the name “Mimo.”

The Human League, which has seen a major resurgence since playing Regeneration Tour 2008. They continue to perform to capacity crowds as they have done very well on the road since their RT2008 appearance.

Howard Jones, who recently made available a box set of his first two albums, Human’s Lib and Dream Into Action, last year performed a series of concerts where he performed both of those creations in order and exactly as there were recorded in the 80s. Jones discusses that in an appearance on Revenge of the 80s Radio.

Red Entertainment says Regeneration Tour 2013 will run in August; the official schedule will be unveiled at a later date. At the time of this post, only two shows have been confirmed: August 7 at the Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta and August 30 at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles.

U.S.-based Regeneration Tours were held in 2008 and 2009. Past participants included A Flock of Seagulls, Naked Eyes, ABC, Berlin and Wang Chung.

The Go-Gos, B-52s to tour together as double-bill

The Go-Gos and The B-52 today announced plans to co-headline tour the U.S. this summer. According to the Go-Gos’ website, exact dates have not been confirmed at the time of this post, but the two alt-pop 80s party bands say they will be stopping in several cities, including New York, Boston, Chicago, Seattle, and Portland.

The Go-Gos began as a group in 1978 as a punk band and later made history as the first all-girl band who played their own instruments on their original songs to hit the Billboard Top 40. They also were the first ladies to play “Johnny Are You Queer?” as a regular concert staple until Josie Cotton would later release the track as a single. They have played live dates regularly together since 1999, despite billing a postponed 2010 concert series as their “Farewell Tour.”

The B-52s. formed in 1976, featured a rather unusual lineup of singers and musicians that gelled together to form a unique sound and quickly earned a reputation as a top party-music band. Their classics include “Rock Lobster,” “Love Shack” and “Song for  Future Generation.” They continue to hit the stage together as major headliners.

Also, upon visiting the Hudson Valley, fans may find it fun to book a room at Kate Pierson’s Lazy Meadow in Mt. Tremper, NY.

Our 3/1 show with Jim Paterson of Dexy’s synd/podcast edit is up

The poodcast/syndication edit for this week’s Revenge of the 80s is up and available at the bottom of this post. This week, we welcome Trombonist “Big Jim” Paterson of Dexy’s as our guest. We will talk about the re-formed band’s touring plans for 2013 (might U.S. dates be in the works?), their latest album, One Day I’m Going to Soar, the series of events that led Paterson to become one of music history’s most prolific trombone players, the value of a good horn section and more. Our conversation leads off hour 2 of the show.

In addition to playing with Dexy’s again, Paterson is also in the group G.I. Blythe, led by Dexy’s co-founder Geoff Blythe.

Godfathers, Stranglers embark on their ‘Feel it Now’ tour (UK)

Punk legends The Godfathers and The Stranglers start a month-long UK tour tonight.

The “Feel it Now” tour begins at the Picture House in Edingburgh; they play 23 dates together, ending up in Croydon on March 31.

In December 2012, The Godfathers released Jukebox Fury, their first new album since 1995.

Ron Asheton tribute concert DVD to be released in June, not Apri

The Ron Asheton Foundation announced on Tuesday the DVD for the 2011 tribute concert in honor of the famed guitarist will be released on June 4, 2013 and not April 9 as previously planned.

Asheton, best known as the former guitarist and co-songwriter for Iggy and the Stooges, died in 2009 and was unable to see his band inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a year later. On April 19, 2011, Iggy & the Stooges, Henry Rollins and guest guitarist Deniz Tek performed the concert in Asheton’s remembrance at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor to a sold-out crowd of fans.

Billboard’s Gary Graff wrote picturesquely of the show:

It was a typical night of Stooges-style brutality but in an even more passionate form, as the group and its guests took a wide swing through the repertoire, clearly moved by the sense of occasion and the cacophonous spirit of the 1,700 fans who snapped up tickets for the concert in less than an hour.
