Our week of 8.12 show podcast/syndication edit is up. Maggie Connell of The Heaters is our guest. The Heaters were one of the LA New Wave scene’s hottest live acts of the late 70s. Led by Maggie Connell, Missy Connell and Mercy Bermudez, the band forged their own sound amid the ascension of the new genre in southern California: a mix of 60s soul, the early girl groups and punk. The Heaters will release the tracks they recorded in 1983 in a few different locations (not in big studios) in a compilation titled: American Dreams: the Portastudio Recordings.

Maggie will discuss the formation of the band, their sound, the energy of their live shows versus studio recordings and the release of the 1983 tracks – many of which were taped in Bermudez’ parents’ home. We will play a track from the collection as well as a selection from Connell’s 2001 solo album, The Luxury of Sadness.

Although he is an internationally-acclaimed musician and all-around entertainer, August Darnell (known to many of his fans as “Kid Creole”) has said many times in the past, including a past interview on Revenge of the 80s Radio, he always wanted to write a musical and send it to the stage. That dream is now a reality as Cherchez La Femme opens tonight to a sold-out crowd at La MaMa Theater in New York City.

Darnell co-wrote Cherchez La Femme with longtime friend and creator Vivien Goldman, who appeared on Revenge of the 80s Radio a few weeks ago to talk about the play (the program with the interview is at the top of this post). It is based on the music of Darnell and his brother, the late Stony Browder Jr, and features choreography by Adriana Kaegi, the original Mama Coconut.

Several fans helped make the musical come to fruition with contributions made to an Indiegogo campaign.

The Delfonics spanned several decades, including the 1980s, and our guest this week is the co-founder, songwriter, leader and singer of the band, William Hart. Their classic soul/R & B sound inspired many of the greats for the last decade including Prince, of whom Hart reminisces fondly in this interview (you will also find out how much the Delfonics’ “La La Means I Love You” meant to the late superstar).

Not only does William have an archive of new music out, he has a mission: with his record company, La La Records, Hart is seeking out great talent while teaching them the business side as well. Hart will discuss how important it is for artists to know they can make money that is rightfully theirs through their artistry and hard work and not get ripped off by record companiy executives like he, his band mates and several other artists did in the 50s, 50s and 70s.
