Organizers for the Isle of Wight Festival say the Boomtown Rats will play a one-off together at their 2013 event.
The Irish alt-rockers broke up in 1986 and had not played together as BTR since the 1986 Self Aid festival. With the festival leaders’ announcement, Geldof says he is looking forward to playing with the group again:
“Playing again with The Rats and doing those great songs again will be exciting afresh… We were an amazing band and I just feel it’s the right time to re-Rat, to go back to Boomtown for a visit.”
At the time of this post, band members and the official Boomtown Rats website have not indicated whether they will be dong anything together after the one performance.
The Rats will be playing on a star-filled bill that includes Paul Weller, Blondie, Hugh Cornwell and Happy Mondays.

B.B. King’s is a favorite concert venue of ours at Revenge of the 80s Radio. In addition to hosting concerts from some of the great classic alternative artists of the 80s, B. B. King’s features an eclectic mix of shows, spanning genres from rock to jazz to blues to country.
In a 2010 interview on Revenge of the 80s Radio, Collins joked about confusion on a date in Pittsburgh when the two Beats performed at venues practically across the street from each other. Now, the two will team up to play in major cities in the Eastern and Midwestern U.S.
Both bands are constantly playing live to full crowds around the world, with Wakeling’s crew performing classics and Collins having released The King of Power Pop in 2010. Both men are virtually synonymous with their selected genres of music: Wakeling’s ska and Collins’ power-pop. They each recorded major hits and have influenced musicians of their respective styles for decades.
The English Beat and Paul Collins Beat are scheduled to play 10 dates together:
- Oct 11 – The Orange Peel, Asheville, NC
- Oct 12 – State Theatre, Falls Church, VA
- Oct 13 – The Center for Arts, Natick, MA

As innovative as Thomas Dolby was in the 1980s, his visionary edge to music and presentation continues to impress as the synth-whiz brings his latest imaginative concoction, a time capsule, on his current U.S. tour.
On March 29, 2012, Dolby brought his keyboards, band and his clever contraption to New York City’s Canal Room.
One might ask: “How might a man who became arguably the face of synth-new wave, developed an efficient music downloading format, blindsided fans with a superb eclectic new album and accompanied that with an interactive internet game top all of that?” Dolby’s longtime fans found out that night as the capsule rolled in, attached to the his tour bus after a stellar night of classics, stories and new music from the man who brought them tales of submarines, pirate twins and hyperactivity.
Adam Ant announced today that unforseen production delays on his album are causing him and producers to push back its release date. In turn, he postponed his U.S. tour, originally scheduled to begin in February.
The decision appears in a post on Ant’s official website:
Due to circumstances beyond the control of Adam Ant, his band and his representation, the release of Adam’s new album has been delayed resulting in the re-scheduling of his February USA tour dates to September and October 2012
Dates will be announced later in the year. Tickets that have already been purchased will remain valid for the new dates at the local venues when they are re-set.
The podcast edit for our 9/23 Revenge of the 80s Radio is up and available at the bottom of this post. This week, Paul Kelly is our guest. He is currently on a mini-tour of the U.S. promoting his upcoming box set, Paul Kelly: A to Z Recordings, by playing 50 of his best songs in alphabetical order over two nights at each venue (including September 26 and 27 in NYC). We also discuss Kelly’s thoughts on songwriting, his influences and his career. Our conversation leads off hour 2 of the show
We also play a new track from the Cowboy Junkies, plus classics by INXS, Trans-X, The Motels, Adam & the Ants and more.
Revenge of the 80s airs live on Radio 80s 87.6FM weekday mornings 7-9am ; We are also on live with Indigo FM, (Victoria, AUS), Seymour FM, Elwood FM and Surf FM in Melbourne, AUS, Central GM in Spain, and Sobel Nation Radio’s Wildcat FM 80s Channel..
Berlin and INXS will tour the United States together this summer. The two new wavers from opposite ends of the Pacific Ocean will play together in a series of concerts beginning July 17th at the Chateau St. Michelle in Woodinville, Washington, making stops in several cities including New York, Detroiit and Richmond before the final scheduled date in Baltimore, Maryland on August 10th.
Berlin is currently working on a new album, following up their 2009 smash CD/DVD set All the Way In. When she is not recording or touring, lead singer Terri Nunn co-hosts the popular Between the Sheets podcast with Gaye Ann Bruno.
INXS is currently winding down a run through Canada. In December 2010, the band released a collection of reprisals of their classics sung by various artists in the collection Original Sin: Deluxe Edition. After winning a reality show contest in 2005, J.D. Fortune remains INXS’ frontman. The tour dates Berlin and INXS play together are:

A concert featuring one of new wave’s iconic bands with a new alt-rock supergroup sounds like an excellent way to spend an evening. That is what a huge crowd at New York’s Nokia Theater thought as well when Blondie brought its “Endangered Species Tour” with special guests (and Revenge of the 80s favorites) Gorevette to the corner of 44th and Broadway on August 31st. They were right.
Friends of Kirsty MacColl will hold a special memorial show, A Concert for Kirsty, on October 10th in honor of her tragic untimely death ten years ago. As Jack Hues said to me in an interview before 2009′s Regeneration Tour, Wang Chung is back and with a bit of a new sound. This year, he and Nick Feldman are headlining a tour to support their latest new EP, Abducted By the 80s, and two more being planned for later this year. With all the style and exuberance of their prime years and the several eclectic Post-WC musical projects between them, Hues and Feldman add more to the unique sound the band invented and became known for. They recently performed new tracks with some slightly-altered renditions of their classics at B.B. Kings Blues Club in New York City.
You can win a pair of passes by sending your name, city and e-mail address to us at email@example.com before 11:59pm Monday, July 5th, 2010 (Eastern US time). We will draw the five winners on the morning of Tuesday, July 6th and post them on our Revenge of the 80s Radio website (winners will also be notified via e-mail). The passes will be available at the door on the night of the concert. You must be at least 18 years old to enter and win. Good luck and we hope to see you there.
U2 is postponing its U2360 Tour until after Bono recovers from back surgery due to an injury he sustained while practicing. They also announced they are forced to cancel their appearance at the Glastonbury Music Festival (UK) on June 25th. More details will appear on U2/s official website, which includes an update on the former candidate to run the World Bank from The Edge.
Considered to be one of the most expensive tours ever put together, the band will have to, unfortunately, fork over more capital to cover for the costs of the original series of dates, but fans and band mates are probably most happy just to know that doctors say he will be okay.
We at Revenge of the 80s Radio wish Bono a speedy recovery.
The Cowboy Junkies recorded their 1988 breakthrough album, The Trinity Session, on a minuscule budget and with one microphone inside an historic Toronto church. It is likely they did not at the time realize it would catapult them to having a following across the US and their native Canada that would travel with them for the next 23 years and beyond. Now and still together, the band continues to tour and record new music. On Saturday May 8th, they took the pilgrimage to the original Woodstock concert site at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts and played in front of a sold-out crowd at its museum stage.
Gorevette continues their ascension in the alt-rock world continues as the band announces concert dates with Blondie in August and September. According to Western Publicity, there are already two dates officially confirmed and more will be set.

This week, we welcome Alan Anton, bassist and founding member of the Cowboy Junkies. They are touring the US again and will be in the tri-state area, including a stop at the legendary Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, NY (May 8th). One of the late 1980s more intriguing popular bands was Swing Our Sister, whose “Breakout” became an international hit in 1986 and led to subsequent success in Europe and US. The band is set to play Sunday, April 18th at the Highline Ballroom on 16th Street in New York City. Tickets are available and can be purchased here.
The trio hit the charts with a fashion designer (Corinne Drewery) as its lead vocalist and two musicians with backgrounds in the new wave movement of the late 70s/early 80s.
While classic alternative music fans in North America are awaiting news of 2010 Regeneration Tour Dates, promoters have set up a concert series in Ireland for April 30-May 2. According to the Tour’s official MySpace Page, the headliners will be Howard Jones, Belinda Carlisle, T’Pau and China Crisis.
Melding two different eras of Detroit Rock and four very different stage personalities, Gorevette begins its first tour as a band after forming a year ago and playing several dates together in Detroit.
The concert series begins at the Hard Rock Hotel in Orlando on May 27th, spanning the U.S. and Canada, then ending at The Warehouse in Houston. The Furs were regulars on the College Music charts throughout the 1980s with hits including “Love My Way” and “The Ghost In You.” They achieved some mainstream success with the title track to the movie “Pretty in Pink” as well.
The complete list of tour dates can be found here.
Congratulations to Glen Johnson of Montclair, NJ and Jared Abramson of Freehold, NJ. They each win a pair of tickets to see Gorevette live with The Donnas at the Highline Ballroom at 431 West 16th Street in New York City on Wednesday, March 24th.
