Our 2/26 Podcast Edit is Up - With an Encore of Our Adriana Kaegi Interview

Our 2/26 Podcast Edit is Up – With an Encore of Our Adriana Kaegi Interview

A blizzard that hit the northeast hard kept me from doing a live Revenge of the 80s Radio show on Friday, but it did allow me to run an encore of the show featuring our 2009 conversation with the multi-talented, elegant and brilliant Adriana Kaegi. She is best known as a co-founder of Kid Creole and the Coconuts (with August Darnell and Coati Mundi) and leader of The Coconuts. Currently, she is runs her own business, Dear Addy Productions, and is working on new music after releasing her first solo album, TAG. Our interview leads off the second hour of the show.

A massive blizzard will keep me from being live in the studio tonight for Revenge of the 80s Radio and time spent digging out of it along with the extra day-job work kept me from recording a new show. We are postponing the airing of my conversation with Haysi Fantayzee’s Kate Garner until the next week’s show (3/5/10), which will also feature new music by Kate as well as a brand new track from Debora Iyall.

Tonight, I will re-broadcast one of my favorite Revenge of the 80s shows, which features an interview with the elegant and multi-talented Adriana Kaegi from almost one year ago and shortly after the release of her brilliant TAG album.

We apologize to those of you who wanted to hear our Kate Garner interview tonight, but we have her on next week. Thank you and enjoy the show.

Revenge of the 80s airs live on Friday nights 7-9ET on Q99.1FM in the Hudson Valley (www.wtbq.com); on Wednesdays 12noon Melbourne, AUS time on Radio 80s 87.6FM; Weekday mornings 7-9am AUS time on Seymour FM; Wednesday nights 6-8pm (Eastern US) and Saturdays 7-9pm on The Volt radio (Canada). Yes, you are reading this post correctly — THAT Mary Buffett, the investment and management expert and author, who will be on Revenge of the 80s Radio tonight. We will not, however, be talking about derivatives, stocks, bonds or managing a business. Our conversation centers around Mary’s music career, which is remembered most through her EP My Boyfriend’s Back and her version of the title track.

Our Revenge of the 80s Valentine's Love Edition Podcast Edit Is Up

Our Revenge of the 80s Valentine’s Love Edition Podcast Edit Is Up

Once again, Revenge of the 80s Radio celebrates the time of amore with a collection of classic alternative love songs.

We honor Valentine’s day with romantic compositions ranging from the sweet sounds of Robey, Allison Moyet and The Little Girls to power ballads like “And As For Myself” by Joey Ramone. As listeners to Revenge of the 80s know, we don’t think all love songs have to be slow either as proven by The Undertones, Dramarama and Voice of the Beehive. We also know that there could never be a romantic classic-alt Valentine’s Day show without Elvis Costello and ABC.

We also celebrated love and romance with music from artists including Men Without Hats, Animotion, Doug and the Slugs, Colin Hay, and Kirsty McColl. Happy Valentines Day from Revenge of the 80s Radio.

It has been quite a while since I devoted a full hour of Revenge of the 80s to classic alternative dance/party tracks. Tonight, we will play those classic club and college party favorites of the era through the entire second hour of the show. Artists featured include Louise Robey, Strawberry Switchblade, the B-52s, Kim Wilde and Alphaville.

The Podcast for our 11/20 Revenge of the 80s Radio show is up and available at the end of this post. The second hour features a conversation with Dave Wakeling of the and General Public.

Wakeling’s music has always been politically charged, with classics like “Stand Down Margaret” and “Tenderness” coming quickly to mind, and his genuine concern is personified by his involvement in charity and humanitarian causes throughout his career. Wakeling is currently touring North America with the English Beat (Ranking Roger leads another “Beat” band in the UK) and says he will be releasing some new music in 2010.

This week’s Revenge of the 80s Radio is taken from a suggestion by Sandro in Melbourne: the second hour will feature classic alternative/new wave music by artists from Australia and New Zealand. There was some great music our of that area of the world, but it was not until the mid-1980s that Americans were able to hear more from them on mainstream and college radio. We will play tracks from artists including Mondo Rock, Midnight Oil, Monte Video and the Cassettes and th e Divinyls.

This week’s show features a conversation with Josie Cotton, who became the world’s new wave sweetheart when she performed (already an international hit) “Johnny Are You Queer” in the movie Valley Girl. While she is known most for singing “Johnny” and the undue controversy surrounding it, the musical world of Josie Cotton is much more than the image she had through an industry from which she walked away.

Tonight’s Revenge of the 80s Radio show will feature a conversation with Josie Cotton. Most 80s fans remember Cotton for her performance of “Johnny, Are You Queer?” on Valley Girl. While it was an international hit, controversy over the song wound up depriving us at the time of the musical talents of this fine songwriter. Whiners from all sides tried to denounce her as an artist simply because of the use of the word “queer” in the song. Record labels, MTV and promoters feared the bad press involved and some truly special works like “He Could Be the One” and “No Pictures of Dad” did not get the attention they should have deserved. Josie left the spotlight for several years after her second album and a disdain for simple-minded industry suits at the time.

Therefore, to commemorate that historic show, the second hour of tonight’s Revenge of the 80s will feature classic alternative artists of our decade covering music of the late 60s and very early 70s — the musical era of the “Woodstock Generation.” We will play tracks from Red Rockers, Doctor & the Medics, Camper Van Beethoven and more.

This Week’s Guest: Wang Chung’s Jack Hues

from the official Wang Chung website

This week, our guest on Revenge of the 80s Radio will be Jack Hues. He and Nick Feldman partnered up with drummer Darin Costin to form Huang Chung, which later became known as Wang Chung. Hues and Feldman will be on this year’s Regeneration Tour with Terri Nunn and Berlin, ABC, Cutting Crew and Missing Persons.

Hues and I discuss the origins of Wang Chung as well as some interesting insights on some of their biggest hits. Along with their appearance on Regeneration Tour 2009, there is some other big news going on with Wang Chung, including a new album that Hues and Feldman are expected to finish in 2010 (we will play a track from the upcoming CD; they will also play some new music at the concert). Hues is also quite busy with his hybrid Jazz group, The Quartet. We spend a good amount of time during our conversation talking about the new band, the music and Hues’ jazz influences. More about The Quartet can be found here.
Our interview will lead off the second hour of the May 29th show.
