The syndication/podcast edit for our 6/22 Revenge of the 80s Radio is up and available at the bottom of this post. This week, Men Without Hats‘ top Chapeau, Ivan Doroschuk will join us for a conversation about the band’s new album, Love In the Ago of War. We discuss the tracks, the personal nature of the album, the music, working with producer Greg “The Rave” Ogilvy, an upcoming tour and more. Our interview with Doroschuk leads off Hour 2 of the show.

We also play classics from Midnight Oil, REM, The Fabulous Poodles, INXS, Taxxi, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Ron Rogers & Rikki St. James and more. Rikki St. James is currently working on a new single, “(Come To My) Candy Shop.” I recently listened to her initial recordings, where Rikki’s voice shines with an enchanting chorus that we eagerly await to premiere on Revenge of the 80s.  There is also a quite interesting story behind the song.

Review: Men Without Hats return with “Love In the Age of War”

Review: Men Without Hats return with “Love In the Age of War”

Months after completing their first North American tour in over 20 years, Men Without Hats releases their first full album in nine years, Love in the Age of War.

Of his first U.S. tour in over 20 years last year, Ivan Doroschuk said he had a blast performing his classic hits. Thus, it is natural that Love in the Age of War would be a virtual throwback to Men Without Hats’ years of early success, with high energy synth tracks reminiscent of Rhythm of Youth and Folk of the 80s (Part III). Back are the raw, upbeat keyboard melodies and bass lines that anchored the MWH signature sound as Doroschuk superbly employs his signature baritone voice, one-beat falsettos and ability to stretch out a one syllable word into several (‘everybody kno-o-ows”).

The lead track, “Devil Comes Round” hits the listener with early new-wave “space age” effects and retro-style pitch bending before Doroschuck’s booming voice comes in, a voice that mellows out a bit for “Head Above Water,” the first single from the album. The latter mixes a more modern pop approach to the classic MWH style. Those cuts are contrasted by the title song, which cunningly switches from the instrumentally raw (similar to the reprise version of “The Great Ones Remember” and “Things in My Life” from Rhythm of Youth) to a chorus that pays homage to the band’s Pop Goes the World and …In the 21st Century albums.

Canadian new wavers Men Without Hats and Trans-X are set to release new albums in May.

Love in the Age of War will be Men Without Hats’ first album of new music since 2003’s No Hats Beyond This Point and comes on the heels of the band’s release of its new version of “Pop Goes the World.”  In 2011, lead singer Ivan Doroschuk jump-started his comeback with his first U.S. tour in over 20 years before heading into the studio to record, during which he previewed some of the music appearing on Love:

The podcast edit for this week’s Revenge of the 80s Radio show is up and available at the bottom of this post. This week, we have a conversation with Camper Van Beethoven co-founder Jonathan Segel, who recently released his 14th solo album, All Attractions. Segel wrote the classic rock-inspired collection while in the Swedish countryside. In addition, Segel also recorded an instrumental improv EP, Apricot Jam. Both albums feature an all-star lineup of guest musicians. Our conversation takes place in the second segment of Hour 2.

Traditional and new "Pop" flavor in Men Without Hats' "Pop Goes the World 2012"

Traditional and new “Pop” flavor in Men Without Hats’ “Pop Goes the World 2012”

With fans eagerly awaiting the band’s upcoming Love in the Age of War album later this year, Men Without Hats offers a taste with a new mix of their 1988 hit “Pop Goes the World.

With the same energy and flavor, MWH frontman Ivan Doroschuk keeps true to the whimsical novelty-song aspect of the track while subtly updating it for today’s dance club atmosphere. The most striking difference from the original is Doroschuk’s ditching of the murmur singing tone of the 1988 hit in favor of the traditional deep “Ivan voice” with the occasional one-syllable falsetto. Also, it would seem that the little girl who introduced the cut back in the 80s is now grown up. Still, Doroschuk and his producers made sure not to take the “pop” out of the quirky song. “Pop Goes the World 2012” is available on Amazon.com and iTunes

Doroschuk is fresh off a successful comeback tour across North America in 2011, his first in 20 years, where he previewed some of his new music. Men Without Hats plans to release Love in the Age of War in May.

Men Without Hats: back in the Big Apple after over 20 years

Winding down the end of his first U.S. tour in over 20 years, Ivan Doroschuk clearly is enjoying his trip back. The Men Without Hats frontman brought a plethora of enthusiasm and vintage moves to New York City’s Best Buy Theater on September 23, 2011.

On this particular date, Ivan and his newest Men Without Hats lineup shared the bill with The Human League. They also headlined their own shows during the trip, as well as having shared the stage with the B-52s and Devo.

Men Without Hats announce US tour dates

Men Without Hats will be touring the US in 2011. Lead singer Ivan Doroschuck and the band released their official tour dates earlier today. Many of those dates, they will share the bill with The Human League. The B-52s will be joining them for a few shows as well. This news comes shortly after Doroschuk announced at the 2011 North By Northwest Festival Men Without Hats is planning to relase a new studio album.

Men Without Hats became international stars with their chartbuster ‘The Safety Dance” in 1983. While only hitting the Top 40 once more after their breakthrough smash, the band developed a strong following thrughout North America. Their last CD was 2003’s No Hats Beyond This Point. This will be Men Without Hats’ first full-length US tour in several years; they were slated to be on the 2009 Regeneration Tour, but a legal issue forced them to back out with Ivan Doroschuck issuing a sincere apology to fans for not participating.

Tonight, we will re-air that interview in our 2 of our program. In hour 1, we will play new music from Paul Collins (The Beat) and I, Ludicrous (with former VOTB bassist Martin Brett on guitar) with classic cuts by Berlin, Mondo Rock, Men Without Hats and more.

Our Revenge of the 80s Valentine’s Love Edition Podcast Edit Is Up

Once again, Revenge of the 80s Radio celebrates the time of amore with a collection of classic alternative love songs.

We honor Valentine’s day with romantic compositions ranging from the sweet sounds of Robey, Allison Moyet and The Little Girls to power ballads like “And As For Myself” by Joey Ramone. As listeners to Revenge of the 80s know, we don’t think all love songs have to be slow either as proven by The Undertones, Dramarama and Voice of the Beehive. We also know that there could never be a romantic classic-alt Valentine’s Day show without Elvis Costello and ABC.

We also celebrated love and romance with music from artists including Men Without Hats, Animotion, Doug and the Slugs, Colin Hay, and Kirsty McColl. Happy Valentines Day from Revenge of the 80s Radio.

Tonight on Revenge of the 80s Radio, we will honor the legendary Michael Hutchence, who would have celebrated his 50th birthday today had it not been for his tragic death in 1997. We will take some time and salute Hutchence with some of his greatest songs with INXS as part of the second hour of the show. The effort by fans to give him a #1 download hit for his landmark day is going strong and can be caught up with at the organizers’ Facebook page. There is also a brilliant tribute website to Hutchence here.
Also, while we are generally not a political show, we must commemorate the Scott Brown Massachusetts Senate seat win, but not because of the new Senator himself: his wife, news anchor Gail Huff, was the central character in the 1985 video for “The Girl With the Curious Hand” by Digney Fignus. The piece gained notoriety as the winner of MTV’s Basement Tapes contest that year.

Canadian New Wave History Comes to Life on DVD

The Canadian contribution to the classic alternative music landscape has been underscored by music historians, yet not forgotten by die-hard fans who listened to college radio and watched MTV in the early half of the 1980s. This is likely the expected result of the bevy of radio industry suits that were still reluctant to offer more airtime to the great new wave bands of the time outside of those that gained exposure from popular movies or (at rare times) were forced in by listener demands.

Regeneration Tour Update: Men Without Hats Out, Cutting Crew In

Fans of Men Without Hats looking forward to seeing one of Canada’s top exports of the 80s live for this year’s Regeneration Tour will be disappointed to learn that they will be unable to perform at this year’s flashback concert series. In a statement given to tour organizers Red Entertainment Agency and posted on the Regeneratio Tour’s website, lead singer Ivan Doroschuk apologizes:

                                        Hello Everybody,

Due to circumstances beyond our control, Men Without Hats will not be joining the Regeneration tour this year. We would like to thank you very much for your continued support and for helping us land the gig in the first place . Hopefully we will be able to rectify the situation and see you all in the very near future .

Until then , have fun & keep dancing

Lead singer/songwriter – Men Without Hats

While it was honorable for Doroschuk to kindly inform Red Entertainment and fans of the bad news, Men Without Hats will be missed on the tour.

Organizers, however, reached an agreement with Cutting Crew to join the tour, which already features ABC, Wang Chung and Heaven 17. Cutting Crew is remembered for such hits as “One For the Mockingbird” and “I Just Died In Your Arms.”

While Men Without Hats was known outside of Canada mainly for the 1983 mega-hit “The Safety Dance,” the band (which also featured his brothers Stefan and Colin) did score two more hits on Billboard’s U.S. Hot 100 chart: “I Like” (#84) and “Pop Goes the World” (#20). The follow-up album to Rhythm of Youth, Folk of the 80s (Part III) did not see commercial success away from the Great White North, but produced one of the great lost dance tracks of the 80s: “Where Do the Boys Go?” The video was a roller coaster ride featuring a strobe-laden performance by the band and an unlimited supply of Bonhomme snowmen:

One of those Bonhommes was apparently so musically inclined that he was asked to play drums for the Pop Goes the World album, which also had legendary rocker Ian Anderson play his flute for the track “On Tuesday.”

After the release of In the 21st Century, Ivan put together a new sound for Sideways. The 1991 release featured electric guitars over the synth-based sound and included a very interesting cover of the Beatles’ “I An the Walrus.”

In 1997, Ivan released a solo dance music CD and 2003 saw the release of a new Men Without Hats album: “No Hats Beyond this Point.”

We will have to catch up with Ivan Doroschuk in the near future to talk about what he has been working on since the last album. Hopefully, this Regeneration Tour appearance means there could be some new music from the band coming soon.

                                            The Regeneration Tour 2009 Lineup

After last year’s Regeneration Tour, we took a poll as to who you would like to see in the coming year’s concert series. According to the official Regeneration Tour website, some of you will get your wish.

Berlin came in first among those polled, and Terri Nunn is scheduled to perform on select dates with a new lineup. ABC will be back as well. Rounding out the tour (so far) will be Wang Chung, Go West and Heaven 17 (not the one Ivan Doroschuk was in before forming Men Without Hats; these are the British guys). While locations have not been officially announced, Regeneration Tour 2009 is scheduled to run between June 17 and July 16.

In our Revenge of the 80s Radio poll, Berlin was the top choice followed by Wall of Voodoo, Alphaville, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark and Missing Persons.

There are some interesting stories to this year’s Regeneration Tour: this is the first year after Martin Fry and ABC first introduced their latest CD, Traffic, which was their first new album in decades. Also, while the Human League was featured in Regeneration Tour 2008, the other side of that band’s historic early 80s split that saw both bands flourish as separate entities, Heaven 17, is one of the acts for the 2009 trip.

Last year’s lineup showcased Naked Eyes, A Flock of Seagulls, Belinda Carlisle, ABC and the Human League. Missing Persons, The Romantics and 10,000 Maniacs also took part on some of the tour dates. Other participants (if any) for the 2009 tour have not been officially announced.

Who Would You Like To See in Next Year's Regeneration Tour?

Who Would You Like To See in Next Year’s Regeneration Tour?

As the North American leg of the Regeneration Tour is finished, a discussion in the official site’s forum had been sparked in reference to a Regeneration Tour 2009. We at Revenge of the 80s Radio would like to know who you want to be included in next year’s new wave concert series. On the left sidebar is a poll where you can vote for your favorites. I included several bands based on some speculation, fan interest and feasibility (for example: Frankie Goes to Hollywood wouldn’t play together on VH1’a “Reuniting the Bands” so they are not included). I excluded this year’s regular participants but included Missing Persons, 10,000 Maniacs, Tommy Tutone and The Romantics, who participated in one or more of the Regeneration Tour concerts. You can choose 6 bands/artists and feel free to post other suggestions on our “comments” section of this post.
