This week on Revenge of the 80s Radio, we pay tribute to one of the most innovative British comedy shows: The Young Ones. We play music from each of the 12 episodes and from other projects by ensemble cast of Rik Mayall (Rick), Ade Edmondson (Vyvyan), Nigel Planer (Neil), Christopher Ryan (Mike) and Alexei Sayle (The Balowski Family and other characters).
As part of a new age of alternative comedy in Great Britain, The Young Ones combined amped-up slapstick, surrealism, non-sequiturs, music, a hamster, talking household objects, featured guests, social commentary, Cliff Richard references and the nation’s traditional brand of comedy to create the immortal 12-episode series.
In honor of the groundbreaking program, we play not only songs from the episodes’ musical guests, but others which were used during the show’s run spanning from the birth of rock onward as well as solo projects and a charity recording from Mayall, Ryan, Edmonson, Planer and Richard.
