Lily Gonzalez: An Up-and-Coming Musician From the Regeneration Tour

Posted by admin on August 29, 2008 | No comments

Many new wave fans went out to see the Regeneration Tour over the past month and enjoyed performances from ABC, Naked Eyes, Belinda Carlisle, A Flock of Seagulls and The Human League. On stage, there were also several other talented musicians who backed up the headliners. I had the pleasure of meeting one of them after the Jones Beach show and was able to listen to some of her music: Lily Gonzalez, who was a backing vocalist and percussionist for ABC and Belinda Carlisle on the tour

Lily has been in the London music scene for several years and, along with the Regeneration Tour, she has worked with such greats as Bono, Paul Young and Dave Stewart. In addition, the U.K. native is a singer/songwriter who also records her own music (we will feature one of her tracks on this week’s Revenge of the 80s Radio show).

Lily’s style from her most recent CD adds modern attitude while being reminiscent of old-school jazz/funk. Her voice ranges from offering an attitude of power through tracks like “Too High” and “More to Me Than Meets the Eye” to a hint of soft vulnerability as she sings “What You Are.” While many of today’s chart-topping female vocalists tend to shy away of instrumental dynamics and jazz riffs for fear of them taking the spotlight from their singing, Lily seems unafraid to perform with creative backing music as her talents are up to the challenge other soloists avoid. This holds especially true in the song “Your Tine Is Now” as Gonzalez sings while playing with syncopation, beat changes and an interesting mix of bass, horn and organ sounds. One might suppose all of this comes from the diverse group of influences she gives credit to on her MySpace page including Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Prince, Steelu Dan, Annie Lennox and David Bowie. The songs are co-written by saxophonist Andy Hamilton, who has recently been on tour with George Michael.

Currently, Lily Gonzalez is an unsigned artist, but a treasure like her should not go as undiscovered for so long. Below is some tracks from her lates CD. For more music from Lily Gonzalez, check out her MySpace page.

REVIEW: Regeneration Tour Concert at Jones Beach in Long Island(8/22/08)

Posted by admin on August 23, 2008 | 3 comments

***Check out our concert picture page here!***

The Regeneration Tour 2008 rolled into the NYC-Metro region with a stop at Jones Beach’s Nikon Theater. The crowd of “80s children” and the younger new wave fans were geared up for the classics from some of their favorite bands and were treated to some new material from a couple of them. It was a beautiful evening as the sun started to set near the calm beach waters into a clear night — perfect for a concert.

Up first was Naked Eyes, who led into “Always Something There to Remind Me” with Pete Byrne playing and singing an acoustic intro of the chorus and hitting the familiar keyboard part to set the tone the entire concert.

Pete Byrne

While the band was known for its synth sound and use of a Farlight CMI sampler, Byrne’s electric/acoustic guitar gave the live show an added dimension. With that, Byrne was able to use the whole stage and engage audience members. Byrne employed the acoustic sound extremely well throughout the set, but most notably in Naked Eyes’ second song: “When the Lights Go Out” and “What In the Name of Love?” — which was played before going out with “Promises, Promises.” The group also gave the fans a glimpse into the future by playing a track called “Losing You” from their upcoming album Piccadilly, due out in 2009. Byrne’s voice flowed as well as it did in the early 1980s and the band did an excellent job re-producing their sound.
Mike Score and A Flock of Seagulls were second in the order, with Score planted firmly in his familiar place behind the keyboard. Score’s strongest point was not his hair, but his musical creativity.

This Week’s Show: Featuring Re-Play of Stan Ridgway Interview

Posted by admin on August 20, 2008 | No comments

This week, Revenge of the 80s Radio will feature a re-play of an interview with the legendary musician/singer/songwriter/storyteller Stan Ridgway. Most famous for being a founding member of Wall of Voodoo, Ridgway started in the music business writing scores for movies as his own company.

From hotelcongress.com

Ridgway talks during the interview about the need for musical innovation at the time of the late 1970a and early 1980s, when radio programming started becoming “safer” and generic. Many music listeners were tired of being force-fed the same mellow mainstream hits, watered-down disco and similar-sounding music industry formulaic songs; they wanted something different and Wall of Voodoo responded.

After Wall of Voodoo broke up, Ridgway went on his own and soon produced the international hit “Camouflage,” the success of which, he revealed, was something of an accident. We talk about songwriting, storytelling, creativity and his career into today, which includes a separate project known as “Drywall” and a stellar group led by his wife and longtime musical partner Pietra Wextrum called Hecate’s Angels.

Ridgway still tours and sells out several concerts every year with old and new fans. Tour information and news can be found on Stan’s excellent website.

We also featured music from artists including Madness, Amazulu, The Tourists and Devo.
