Welcome back!
The podcast for our 8/28 Revenge of the 80s Radio show is up and available at the bottom of this post. This week’s show features a conversation with Josie Cotton, who became the world’s new wave sweetheart when she performed (already an international hit) “Johnny Are You Queer” in the movie Valley Girl. While she is known most for singing “Johnny” and the undue controversy surrounding it, the musical world of Josie Cotton is much more than the image she had through an industry from which she walked away.

Tonight’s Revenge of the 80s Radio show will feature a conversation with Josie Cotton. Most 80s fans remember Cotton for her performance of “Johnny, Are You Queer?” on Valley Girl. While it was an international hit, controversy over the song wound up depriving us at the time of the musical talents of this fine songwriter. Whiners from all sides tried to denounce her as an artist simply because of the use of the word “queer” in the song. Record labels, MTV and promoters feared the bad press involved and some truly special works like “He Could Be the One” and “No Pictures of Dad” did not get the attention they should have deserved. Josie left the spotlight for several years after her second album and a disdain for simple-minded industry suits at the time.

From the superbly elegant solo album by Adriana Kaegi, TAG, comes this sultry, bedazzling track with a new video to match. Adriana, who co-founded the flashy and stylish Kid Creole and the Coconuts, shines in a 1940s-style outfit, matching the cool lounge-jazz sounds that make the entire album special (you can listen to tracks from Tag on the Reverb Nation player on the right column of this blog).
To go along with her captivating voice, Adriana bewitches the viewer with her sultry movements and facial gestures, seemingly flirting with the camera while commanding it at the same time.
Here is Adriana Kaegi’s video for “Ooh La La,” this first from Tag:
As mentioned above in this post, you can listen to Tag on our Reverb Nation music player on the right column of this blog. You can also get your own copy of Tag through several distributors, including Amazon. For more on Adriana, go to her official website. Also, you can listen to our interview with Adriana Kaegi from earlier this year here.

This is going to be a fun show: Josie Cotton is our guest on Revenge of the 80s Radio on Friday. Many remember her as the prom band singer in the Valley Girl movie and from her international hit song “Johnny, Are You Queer?” While those were huge landmarks in new wave history, there is much more to this talented singer and songwriter than those memories.

Whether you think Woodstock was a great celebration of peace and music or a smelly hippiefest, the fact is that the 1969 concert in Bethel, New York was a landmark in music history. Therefore, to commemorate that historic show, the second hour of tonight’s Revenge of the 80s will feature classic alternative artists of our decade covering music of the late 60s and very early 70s — the musical era of the “Woodstock Generation.” We will play tracks from Red Rockers, Doctor & the Medics, Camper Van Beethoven and more.

One of the all-time great concert films, thought to be lost in the annals of the Warner Brothers archives, is now available for new wave fans on DVD. For the first time, Urgh! A Music War, the 1981 movie loaded with performances from classic alternative pioneers including The Cramps, X, UB40, The Police, XTC, Klaus Nomi and some lesser-known acts is available for us, the common people, who are now able to see the footage collection in its entirety.
The film was released in 1981 and serves as another time stamp of music history and has aired at times over the years on cable television. It was not, however, released on VHS due to a rights issue (although there are conflicting accounts on its availability on an old laser disc format).
