    August “Kid Creole” Darnell’s musical dream comes to life in NYC

      Although he is an internationally-acclaimed musician and all-around entertainer, August Darnell (known to many of his fans as “Kid Creole”) has said many times in the past, including a past interview on Revenge of the 80s Radio, he always wanted to write a musical and send it to the stage. That dream is now a reality as Cherchez La Femme opens tonight to a sold-out crowd at La MaMa Theater in New York City.

      Darnell co-wrote Cherchez La Femme with longtime friend and creator Vivien Goldman, who appeared on Revenge of the 80s Radio a few weeks ago to talk about the play (the program with the interview is at the top of this post). It is based on the music of Darnell and his brother, the late Stony Browder Jr, and features choreography by Adriana Kaegi, the original Mama Coconut.

      Several fans helped make the musical come to fruition with contributions made to an Indiegogo campaign.

      The story hits both light and dark themes ranging from unrequited love to loss to the allure of success. Highlights form the score include such Darnell classics as  The score is comprised of the iconic title song Cherchez La Femme” and other hits by Kid Creole and the Coconuts, such as “Annie, I’m Not Your Daddy,” “Stool Pigeon,” “Endicott” and “I’m A Wonderful Thing Baby,” along with new compositions.

      Cherchez La Femme runs at La MaMa Theater May 23 through June 12. Tickets can be ordered through the theater’s website.

        Our wwek of 4/22 show is up.  Vivien Goldman, artist, music journalist, singer, author and NYU Professor will be with us once again on Revenge of the 80s Radio. Vivien and August Darnell co-wrote the musical “Cherchez La Femme,” which will play at the La Mama Theater in Manhattan late May-early June. It is based on the music of Darnell and his brother, Stoney Browder. Vivien will discuss the show and the soon-to-be-released retrospective album of her music, “Resolutionary,” featuring her solo tracks as well as work with The Flying Lizards and Chantage.Our conversation takes place during hour 2 of our programCLF_small_poster

        Punk history summer class at NYU open to all

        Punk history summer class at NYU open to all

          There are TWO days left to enroll in Punk Professor Vivien Goldman‘s class on the history of the genre that introduced The Dickies, The Sex Pistols, The Damned and other greats to the world. The course, Punk Rock: History and Criticism is being offered at New York University, where Goldman is an adjunct professor, and is open to everyone. The deadline to sign up for the class if the close of NYU admissions offices on Tuesday, April 26th, 2011.

          Goldman, a founding member of The Flying Lizards, journalist and solo artist, teaches this and related classes at NYU. According to the course description, students and enrollees will learn about the beginnings and development of the punk rock scene in New York and London. Also to be discussed will be the advent of independent record labels, the work of standout punk artists and the genre’s influence on future musicians. Information on how to sign up for the course can be found on the New York University website. While there are no pre-requisites to attend, the credits are offered as a part of NYU’s Entrepreneurism in the Music Industry degree.

            Goldman’s warm personality shines as we discuss her wealth of knowledge, her accomplishments and her world travels. Her love of music led Vivien to a career spanning several aspects of the arts.

She is also a founding member of the Flying Lizards.

                On the program, we will discuss Goldman’s eclectic career, her intriguing life path, her books, music and current projects. We will also play tracks from Vivien as a solo artist and with the Flying Lizards. Our conversation will lead off the second hour of the show.

                  Adriana Kaegi‘s brilliant documentary about the band she co-founded, Kid Creole and My Coconuts, will be showing on Wednesday, June 2, 6:30pm at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York City. Our review of Kid Creole and My Coconuts is here.

                  Both Adriana and The Punk Professor, Vivien Goldman, will be available after the movie for a Q & A session. Tickets are $20 and reservations can be made via the Chelsea Art Museum website.

                    Adriana Kaegi‘s world premiere of her documentary Kid Creole and My Coconuts highlighted the CMJ Music & Film Festival at the Chelsea Clearview Theaters in New York Thursday night. The story of one of the most unique bands of the 1980s was coupled in a special double-bill with a documentary on another influential alternative band, The Fleshtones titled Pardon Us For Living, the Graveyard is Full.
