Tonight’s show will feature some requests from listeners and a new track from Gorevette, the new band led by Nikki Corvette (Nikki and the Corvettes) and Amy Gore of the Gore Gore Girls.
Robin Lane and several female rockers will serve as a panel for a special symposium hosted by the Institute for Musical Arts (IMA) on December 6th in Goshen, Massachusetts called “I Will $urvive: Making it in the Music Business.” Lane will be the keynote speaker for the all-day event which features a lineup of Rockgirl Magazine Founder Carla DeSantis, IMA Founder and former Fanny member June Millington, Musician/DJ Liz Borden and singer/songwriter Nini Camps.
Among the topics that will be discussed are making money as a musician in the rough economy, whether the “glory days” of music have passed and the future of the industry. This is an important seminar for independent musicians and it’s location at the IMA’s headquarters (165 Cape St in Goshen, MA) is a relatively short trip from most of the northeast. Tickets are $75 ($50 for students) for the event, which will run between 10am and 6pm on December 6th. There is still space available as of the time of this post. More information can be found on the IMA’s website: www.ima.org.
Just in time for the holidays! The new Adam Ant CD, Live at the Bloomsbury, is scheduled to be released on December 12th in a limited edition pressing, according to his official website.
The CD is a recording taken of Ant’s September 2007 one-time performance in front of about 500 at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London. In addition, the package comes with photos from the performance and the sound-check as well as some pictures printed form his own private collection including old family pictures. This will be the first full album put out by Ant since 1995′s Wonderful.
While loyal Adam Ant fans will be counting the days, here is the artwork to the CD as it was recently unveiled:

The B-52s will be among the artists to be part of the NBC Network’s “Chime In” campaign. This is an interesting promotional effort by the big TV company as it brings in several musicians to add their own charms to the familiar “G-E-C” notes we heard since we were children.
The B-52s are among the lineup of performers including B. B. King, Clint Black, The Flaming Lips and Richie Sambora who will be featured playing the familiar tones. The “Chime In” promos will be aired during NBC’s Prime Time TV schedule.
Here is a “Behind the Scenes” video from the NBC.com website followed by the actual promo:
This has been a great year for the B-52s: Their new album, Funplex, kicked of with rave reviews, they had a successful U.S. tour and has the honor of opening up for The Police on their final concert in October before Sting, Summers and Copeland went back to their own projects again.
Due to technical difficulties, the podcast for our 11/21 show is not up yet. We are rectifying the situation and hope to have it up as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Tonight’s Revenge of the 80s Radio Show will feature music from several artists from the 80s making some news in recent weeks. Adam Ant will soon release Live at the Bloonsbury, a live CD from a special one-off concert earlier this year, Missy Belland of Voice of the Beehive has a new line of fairies out for Made in Heaven by Missy, Fishbone‘s Fall Tour is heating up and will be in NYC soon, new material was also recently put out by Nikki Corvette with her new band, Gorevette (which we will feature in the next show), Dave Alvin of The Blasters, and Andy Prieboy. We will play classics from these and other artists tonight.
Revenge of the 80s Radio airs live every Friday night 7-9pm on Q99.1FM in the Hudson Valley, NY and on www.revengeofthe80sradio.com; Wednesdays 12noon Melbourne, Australia time on 87.6FM “Radio 80s” in Korumburra, AUS and our podcast will be available on Saturday.
Most of the Voice of the Beehive fans that listen to the show and visit this website know Missy Belland now makes hand-crafted fairies in her California studio and is a regular attraction at the Laguna Beach Sawdust Festival, which takes place this fall between November 22 and December 14. Her newest line of faeries are out and available for the holiday season on her website for Made In Heaven By Missy.
Missy has been selling her faeries at the Sawdust Festival for several years before elevating “Made In Heaven By Missy” to another level through a very well-done website and her winning the 2007 Yahoo “Ultimate Collection” contest.
Tracey and Missy Belland were the first artists I interviewed on Revenge of the 80s Radio in March of 2008; a 2007 interview on a business show I produce and serve as guest-host for with Missy re-sparked my inspiration to make this radio show a reality.
Many of you may already know that Annabella Lwin has been extremely active in raising both money and awareness for relief and rebuilding efforts in her birthplace of Yangoon, Myanmar, Burma, where the people there are still recovering from the devastation Cyclone Nargis wrought on May 2nd. In a past Revenge of the 80s Radio interview with Lwin, she discussed her plans to put together a benefit CD and concert for the people of Myanmar. While relief workers and donations have helped solidify local rebuilding in Yangoon and the surrounding regions as well as they could under tough circumstances, reports out of Burma reveal the overall situation to be cause for worldwide alarm.
Recently, Annabella posted two videos on her MySpace blog alleging the Burmese Government under General Thain Shwe is still torturing and murdering thousands of people, including several Buddhist Monks. Because of Lwin’s hard work to help the people in Myanmar, I thought these videos should receive some space here on the Revenge of the 80s Radio site:
As far as helping with Cyclone Nargis relief efforts there, you can still donate to groups working in Myanmar. There are several links (suggested and approved by Annabella Lwin) on this page of the Revenge of the 80s Radio site. For more information on the benefit EP, go to Annabella’s website or MySpace page.
The podcast for this week’s Revenge of the 80s Radio show, which features our interview with Andy Prieboy is up and available at the bottom of this post. Prieboy is remembered most as one of the lead singers for Wall of Voodoo. His repertoire is, however, much longer: he spent some time in the San Francisco punk scene with the rather unique band Eye Protection, he is an accomplished solo artist, a novelist, a playwright and a true creator. In recent weeks, Prieboy has released some new material, including two versions of “Shine (Red Bead Follows Blue),” both of which were premiered on Revenge of the 80s (the latter after the interview). “Shine” also features Stan Ridgway on harmonica, this is the first time both Wall of Voodoo front-men played on the same track.
During our conversation, Andy and I discuss several topics including:
Andy’s very diverse musical influences and how they helped form his own style
The stories behind some of his greatest songs
His thoughts on the music industry
How “White Trash Wins Lotto” when from a lark to a critically acclaimed musical
His most recent and upcoming musical creations
Andy will soon release more material that he had been working on for some time, but he also talked about putting out some Eye Protection songs. Andy has evolved greatly as a musician and openly talks about the music from the past through today. He had always made it a point to make his music his own way without losing any musical integrity (a consistency that had stood since the Eye Protection days). He will never be accused of “selling out.” He now produces his own music in his studio and releases tracks when they are ready without record company suits dictating how things should be done. Fans of this great creator would not have it any other way.
During the first hour, we feature music from the era including tracks from Blondie, Dexy’s MIdnight Runners, The Damned and Icehouse
Here’s a little something extra on the Andy Prieboy front: He somplsed and performed the theme to Merill Markoe’s “The Lewis Lectures.” This is a youtube video of it:
